Jaffery Pine, Sentinel Dome, Yosemite Jeffery Pine - Sentinel Dome, Yosemite, CA. Photographed about 1 hr. before sunset. Because of the altitude and the low, right angle location of the sun the polarizing filter was almost too effective rendering the sky almost black and increasing the already high contrast. I should have taken a second shot using an 81B warming filter to soften the overall scene. The wispy clouds somewhat ameliorated the cold sky saving the overall picture. Format: 35mm, Lens: 28mm lens, Filter: Polaroid, Aperture: f16. - Mark Borneman

Mountain Palm Springs, Borrego State Park, Ca Oasis in the Desert - Mountain Palm Springs, Borrego State Park, Ca. Extreme contrast of scene and inability of the Velvia to accommodate the full range necessitated the sacrificing of the detail in either the shadows of the palms or bright white rocks. The frame shown here was exposed to preserve the shadow details. This image shows the limitations of most transparency film. I will be re-taking this same scene shortly with a fine-grain print film. Stay tuned. Format: 6x7, Lens: 50mm, Filter: Polaroid, Stay tuned. Exposure: f32 @ 1/4 sec, Film: Fuji Velvia. - Mark Borneman

San Juan Aspens, San Juan Mountains, Co San Juan Aspens - San Juan Mountains, Colorado. Hand holding my camera and shooting midday toward the sun, I had very little hope for this picture and didn't even bracket. I was surprised at the results. The streaked shadow and uniform ground cover coupled with the deep green firs at mid-distance hold the scene and composition together. The overall yellow-orange of most of the foliage imbued the white aspen trunks with a warm glow. Although the vintage 28mm lens contributed some flare near the top of the image, the overall scene is so bright it is hardly noticeable. Format: 35mm, Lens: 28mm, Aperture: f16, Film: Fuji Velvia. - Mark Borneman

McGee Creek in the Sierras McGee Creek - The Sierras, early October 1999: To avoid the harsh light of day I arrived while the creek and its autumn foliage was still in the shade of the Sierra Mountains. As the rising sun's disk just broke above the mountaintop I took the photo. Minutes later the light became too bright for the film to accommodate the contrast range of the scene. Format: 6cm x 7cm, Lens: 127 mm with 81B warming filter, Film: Fuji Velvia. - Mark Borneman

Trees in Yosemite, Ca Hair - Yosemite, Ca: Lense: 70-300 Zoom, Exposure: Aperature Priority f16, Film: Fujichrome Velvia - Lawrence

Oak Grove at the Blue Sky Preserve, Poway, CA Oak Grove at the Blue Sky Preserve #1 - Poway, CA: Exposure was determined using an incident light meter between the two trees aiming the lumisphere at the camera. This was a difficult scene to expose due to the limits in transparency film latitude as can be seen in the bright areas. I need to return on a cloudy day to get it better. Format: 6x6, Lens: 40mm, Exposure: f11 @ 1sec, Film: Fuji Provia (RDPIII) - Stavros

Oak Grove at the Blue Sky Preserve , Poway, CA Oak Grove at the Blue Sky Preserve #2 - Poway, CA: Photographed early morning on a cloudy day. This photo has better detail than the above photo because the overcast lighting was well within the film latitude. Exposure was determined using the camera's center weighted meter. Format: 6x6, Lens: 40mm, Exposure: f16 @ 3sec (-1/2 EV), Film: Kodak 100SW - Stavros

Oak Grove at the Blue Sky Preserve , Poway, CA Oak Grove at the Blue Sky Preserve #3 - Poway, CA: Photographed one early September morning using print film. This photo has more detail than the Oak Grove #1 photo due to the wider latitude of the film. Exposure was determined with an incident light meter. I also like the color of this film over the Provia. Format: 6x6, Lens: 40mm, Exposure: f16 @ 2sec, Film: Agfa Ultra 50 - Stavros
